Decoding the B.Com Semester 3 (CCF) Syllabus: Your Roadmap to Success

The transition to Semester 3 is where the Calcutta University curriculum gets real. The "honeymoon period" of Sem 1 & 2 is over, and the core papers have arrived. Here is everything you need to know about the new CCF structure.

If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed by the new Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF), you are not alone. Semester 3 is notoriously heavy because it introduces the backbone of Commerce: Costing and Direct Tax.

At NEX Edu Classes, we believe that understanding your syllabus is half the battle won. So, let’s skip the jargon and look at exactly what you’ll be studying over the next six months.

The Semester at a Glance

Unlike previous semesters where you might have juggled multiple minor theory papers, Semester 3 focuses heavily on two Major subjects.

Category Paper / Subject Credits
DSC (Major) 1. Cost Accounting II
2. Direct Tax I
8
Minor Consumer Behaviour OR
Fundamentals of Info Systems
4
SEC (Prac) Comp. Accounting & Data Science 4
AEC MIL – 1 (Language) 2
IDC Indian Economic Environment 3
Total Credits: 21

The "Big Two": What to Expect

Your Semester 3 GPA will largely depend on how you handle the two Major papers. Here is the breakdown:

1. Cost Accounting II

This isn't just about making cost sheets anymore. In Sem 3, you dive into managerial costing. You will be dealing with Activity Based Costing (ABC), which is a modern method used by top MNCs, and industry-specific methods like Contract and Service costing.

2. Direct Tax I

This is likely a brand new subject for you. Direct Tax covers the Income Tax Act of 1961. You will learn how to calculate taxable income under the five heads: Salary, House Property, Business (PGBP), Capital Gains, and Other Sources.

Pro Tip: Direct Tax requires consistent practice. The rules change every year (Assessment Year), so using old books is a big mistake.

Expert Strategy Session

Reading the syllabus is one thing; understanding how to tackle it is another. We recorded a detailed breakdown of the strategy you should adopt for Cost and Tax.

We also did a specific deep-dive into the Major Papers (Cost & Tax) to explain the chapter-wise weightage:

Start Early, Stay Ahead

Semester 3 is short. With the sheer volume of the Direct Tax syllabus, waiting until the last month is not a viable strategy.
